Informed Scotland October 2024: Curriculum improvement & the power of skills
It was a busy month for learning & skills, including the start of Education Scotland’s Curriculum Improvement Cycle – a review of all curricular areas, described as ‘evolving’ Curriculum for Excellence, not ‘ripping it up’. Recruitment is underway for practitioners to get involved in various ways.
Reports worth drawing your attention to this month:
- Skills for Today and Tomorrow by the Fraser of Allander Institute for CMS Scotland
- The Open University’s Powering up Productivity on why it’s worth investing in skills
- and The OU’s PolicyWISE comparison guide to language learning across UK nations and the Republic of Ireland
- A College Innovation Network report on the untapped potential of Scotland’s colleges to support and drive innovation in business
- The findings of Parentkind’s National Parent Survey for Scotland 2024
- ADES and Staff College’s detailed Perspectives on AI in Education with insights into the views of learners and teachers drawn from their project led by Horizons Research
- Dyslexia Scotland’s report on dyslexia, education and employment
- Two reports on care experience, from Who Cares? Scotland and from CELCIS for the Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research
- Plus annual statistics from the Scottish Funding Council on HE students and qualifiers and Widening Access, Jisc on the digital experience of HE and FE teaching staff and the Institute of Student Employers on graduate recruitment.
October also saw SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) granted taught degree awarding powers.
And palpable relief was felt by many across the landscape as the inspirational Young Enterprise Scotland was brought back from the brink of closure [report by Insider]. Its challenges continue, however, as it explores alternative revenue sources to secure future funding [report by The Scotsman].
Finally, this is Scottish Careers Week – an SDS webinar today (13 Nov) on ‘Understanding the Voice of Young People’ is among many activities and events well worth investigating.
